    Okay, well for starters, what spices flowed through to Western Europe,
before about 1300?  I am talking here of exotic spices, not the native
spices , if there were any (were there?).  How were these spices used?  And
were there any spices used in Byzantium that did not flow through to the
rest of Europe?
