The point was that Platina's information is based on Varro and other older 
sources. Even the recipes are not his own. While we do have a very well 
presented work covering a particular subject dear to us all, it is merely 
compilation of older works by others and we have no way of knowing what was 
'contemporary' or not other than the notes he occasionally uses saying this 
is eaten by that person, etc.). 

The comparison is that Da Vinci who was a contemporary meticulously wrote 
down his observations of the world around him. It is understandable that 
Platina may not have mentioned corn if he were aware of it because of the 
novelty and the fact that it would have been little used so unless it had 
real medicinal value in Platina's mind why would he include it in his book? 
OTOH, Da Vinci would have been intrigued by the newness of it.  I would 
therefore find that the fact that Leonardo didn't mention it to be far more 
important than the fact that Platina did not mention it. This is not 
'dissing' anyone.' It is an observation that I think has some validity.
