I read a year or two ago in an old magazine that La Florida (like Virginia)
used to have much wider borders. It's supposed to have included all of the
south and central Appalachians, indeed all the way up to what later became
Virginia, plus the Mississippi valley and points west.

Not that the Spanish ever settled the whole area. They just explored a few
bits of it, planted a few colonies, and tried to claim the whole lot. I
don't know what part of Florida was explored by Hawkins (or the Black Fox
either ;-) ).
