Obviously, the latinoamericano culture perceives death far
differently than most norteamericanos. My professor indicated
that the festival is a Christianization of the monthlong festival
celebrated by the Aztecs at this time of year to honor their
 dead.

I wonder what might have been on the Aztec tables? Hey, it's in
 period! :) >>

Also in period, EARLY period, of course, is the Celtic celebration of
Samhain, which has much of the same sentiment as Los Dias de los Muertos.
Some of the celebratory practices are also the same. One of the traditions
is that the early Celts carved images of "spirits" into turnips, which led
eventually to the American practice of carving jack-o-lanterns from pumpkins,
and the hispanic practice of the ghoulish pastries. Los Dias de los Muertos
is, like the American Hallowe'en, a mish-mash of cultures. It seems to take
something from the Moors of Spain, the Celts of Spain, the Aztecs, and the
Catholic Church, and probably also the Inca, the French, the English.....
