I recently heard a line in some movie or other-- "President Franklin
Roosevelt is coming here for Christmas dinner. I wonder what Democrats
eat, anyway?"

I wouldn't be prepared to compare the I.Q.s of Bartolomeo and Leonardo,
that would be a sucker's bet, but you may be underestimating a man who,
while lacking the obvious advantage of illegitimacy held by Leonardo,
did go from small-town anonymity to being both the Chief Librarian at
the Vatican and a political figure of sufficient importance to imprison
him for treason _twice_.
