This reminds me of the "cloved lemon", an SCA
"tradition", where someone brings a lemon that is
studded with cloves.  That someone gives it to someone
he/she wishs to kiss.  The willing recipient then
pulls out a clove, bites into it to freshen their
breath and the two people kiss.
