Juliana suggests some sort of "Welcome Wagon" type post be sent to newcomers
on the SCA-cooks list

Most of the sorts of basic queries, curiosities and wonderings of those new
to the cooks list can be satisfied by "Stefan's Flori-thingy", more
correctly known as Stefan's Florilegium (I seem to be one of the few that
can spell it without fear) located at www.florilegium.org.

SCA-cooks isn't the only list Stefan collects information from, so this
advice applies to most any SCA sub-culture as well as general SCA
information. The groupings and sub-groupings are mostly logical, though
sometimes you do find things where you don't expect or can't find things in
a spot that seems sensible to you. Feel free to ask the list, or Stefan for
advice when this happens. You can work your way to Cariadoc's Miscellany
from there, or from the SCA home page (www.SCA.org) A search on
"miscellany" will also get you there, on every search engine I've ever
tried. ditto for "florilegium".

Other good places to look are your kingdom or more local group webpage,
which may have A&S links or an A&S page. Not surprisingly, a lot of these
send you to the Florilegium or the Miscellany when you click on the various
topics. But not always.

And finally, while you can type in a specific address to privately ask a
question of a listmember, there's no reason not to go ahead and post the
question on the list. There might be 20 other lurking newcomers who are
more shy than you, or not-so-newcomers who haven't thought up that question
yet. Don't be nervous. We won't bite. Attribute any "bite" you may
perceive as simply an element of electronic communication rather than taking
it personally. In all liklihood, the person responded late at night at
home, or in a hurry during a break at work and simply didn't have time to
make other than a curt statement.

"Documentation, please?" will be seen a lot in response to informative
posts. It's not a challenge to to the statement, merely a request for the
completing proof. Sometimes, it results in documentation the rest of us
didn't have yet. Sometimes it results in defining a new way of looking at
old documentation. Sometimes it merely allows the original poster to
discover they've been working with stereotypes rather than facts. At any
rate, more than one of us usually learns something as a result of that
little request.

Bonne
