Greetings to all who walk the list!

I'm at work and have a patron looking for a source for aromatic vinegar or
another way (non-violent please!) to soften animal bones.  It seems that
prisoners used to use this as a process to soften the animal bones to fashion
models and dolls out of around the 18th century. He wants to use this 
method to make model ships.

Any help greatfully appreciated.
