A good point. However, eggplant was readily consumed as food and it's stems 
and leaves are equally poisonous. It can be assumed that, as with many 
foodstuffs, the poisonous properties of the leaves and the edibility of the 
stalk would have been perceived at the beginning through the experience of 
dropping over dead or getting deathly ill if the wrong part was eaten.
