You should also know that the sandalwood used for making saunders/sanders is different from the sandalwood for incense and candalmaking. It is a different wood. Niether is toxic, but the wrong one will have little coloring value and taste a lot more like sawdust.
If you grind your own, be sure your get the right species of tree 8-)

You're right--it wasn't! Period gingerbread is basically a candy made by
adding spices and breadcrumbs to boiled and skimmed honey. There's a recipe
in <A HREF="http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/cariadoc/miscellany.html">Cariadoc's
Miscellany,</A> if anyone wants to try it. It's quite good--but don't try to
grind up your own sandalwood from chips to color it! Even my newer coffee
grinder couldn't quite succeed in powdering it, and the tiny bits of wood
were occasionally noticeable........... :-(
