To confuse the issue a little more, sugar used to be (and could still be)
graded according to fineness of the grind from 1X to 10X. With 10X being what
we know as 'powdered sugar' and 4X the equivalent of caster sugar and 1X
closely resembling granulated sugar. The X's in between were mainly of
interest to professional bakers, commercial cooks and professional chefs.
