We've just done a feast which was supposed to be Portuguese, since
we're sitting on the tip of Africa and were doing a Portuguese
explorer theme... Problem is, there's precious little available.
The one cookbook we do have is one Cariadoc had in early versions of
his collection, but since it's a translation into English from the
translation into modern Portuguese of the original
fifteenth-century document, it's madly frustrating to use: very
modernised, and no differentiation between original text and
translator's notes. But there are some nice recipes in it! We made
a rather good beef pie, meatballs, and a sort of shortbread biscuit
flavoured with orange flower water. (I cheated with the last one, I
fear, and used an Elizabethan recipe as I didn't have time to tinker
with a proper adaptation). It also has some interesting pasta
recipes, several of them sweet dishes. We bulked out the rest of the
feast with other fifteenth-century dishes, mostly Italian and French.

Cindy sent me a copy of the cookbook (it's quite short);
I've just sent another copy to Melissa in Australia, and she's going
to scan it and convert to a text file, so perhaps she could let you
have a copy of that...? (Mel, are you listening...?)

I have _no_ recipes with me at work right now, so I fear spoon
teasing has to be the order of the day. If people would like
specific recipes, please let me know.

in service,
Jehanne
