I don't know if it will help with the proposed database, but perhaps some 
of you will find this useful for general cooking and discussion purposes:

It's the FAQ from rec.food.cooking.  It contains measurement 
comparisons, definitions of ingredients (ex., strong flour, nutella, crisco, 
pavlova), and some useful cooking tips (like approximately how many 
celery stalks you need for 1 cup, chopped).
