Thank you for your thoughts on this matter (and all others who have contributed)
- - I'm enjoying seeing the varied points of view on this!

As Meghan remarked "Of course, your mileage may vary..." and I think this is
where Meliora's original query started...

In Australia we seem to have a wide-spread smallish membership that tends to
make the having of a local Masters/Mistress' guidance more of a wish than a
reality (exceptions of this tend to be the densely populated areas of
Rowany(Sydney)/Stormhold(Melbourne). Add to the equastion the scarcity of
Cooking Pelicans/Laurels (two I believe - Master Charles (resides in Canberra) &
Mistress Gabrielle (resides in Sydney) and the problem becomes more complicated.

As a personal example my area (Shire of St Florians/Barony of River Haven -
Brisbane, Queensland) has 6 Pelicans (only 4 of which are active) and 2 Laurels
and none of these gentles specialise in the art of cooking. There is a
sprinkling of other SCAdians up here who are interested in cooking period
recipes but whilst certainly friends they do not either have the knowledge or
the interest in the areas I myself would like to persue. (and the one person I
have been learning from has recently been made the Baroness of River Haven and
been told to take a sabbatical from running events <sigh>)

Therefore I find myself wandering off interstate 2 to 3 times a year to visit
Meliora (resident of Barony of Politarchopolis - Canberra) so we can actually
make the recipes we've found; traded and discussed over email & telephone. I
suppose that to any number of people the thought of a 2000kms (about 600 miles
each way) journey just to go cooking (and book shopping :-p) is mind boggling -
to me it's the only way of spending time with a like-minded, very motivated
friend who's as keen to learn as I am.

We also find ourselves asking our questions to this list in lieu of a local
mentor (ok - so we'd probably still ask you anyway as the answers are always
informative and sometimes amusing! <grin> and I now know what a cuskynole is
<wicked grin>)

To sum up - both Mel & I are already working in "Vitual reality" mode with our
use of emails and voice mail and will probably have to continue to do so to
acheive our goals (mine is to have the confidence to invite most of you to a
feast where everything is perfect - see! Long term goals are the best :-p!!)
unless we manage to convince a few of you to embrace travel and adventure ;-)

Neither of us are apprentices (or likely to become Peers in the forseeable
future :-p) yet both of us are looking for guidance; acceptance and
encouragement that would usually come in the more formal relationship of Mentor
to student* - guess we'll just keep posting to you guys for all three :-p

Mari
(apologies for the length of this!)

*Student - this term I like!
