SC - EINTOPF history & recipe

Hello Listies,
I asked my friends on the Jewish list that I'm on if anyone had heard of or 
made  EINTOPF  since many of them lived through that awful time and some of 
them are themselves Germen, here are there answers and a recipe.

I asked Bill who was in Germany during the early Hitler years.  He said that 
Hitler mandated the Germans to make an eintoph meal two times a week to 
conserve energy.  Eintoph literally translates to "One Pot" which is a 
casserole.  It would be similar to our Cholent dishes

Phillipa, i just recently received a book called "Authentic German Homestyle
Recipes"  here is the one they have for Eintopf

ONE POT  EINTOPF
1 lb boneless chuck beef
2 Tbs shortening
1 onoin diced
1 lb carrots
1/2 lb apples
1 1/2 lbs potatoes
2 1/2 cups water
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp lemon juice
dash of pepper
dash of nutmeg

cut beef into cubes, and brown in hot shortening with diced onions.  peel 
carrots, apples and potatoes, and cut into cubes.  add to the meat with 
water, 
salt, sugar, lemon juice, dash of pepper, and dash of nutmeg.  cook 30 to 40 
minutes until tender.  serves 4.

"Three men in a boat" by Jerom Klapka Jerom( not sure about spelling the 
name - read it in russian)
