David -

thank you for being sweet enough to consider that distant to Lochac might be
used as an excuse for non-possession of your books - however most of the serious
cooks that I know (and I seem to meet more of them each event :-p) don't let
distance or finance come between them and a great souce (although it may take us
just a little longer to obtain it sometimes - bookpost to Australia being a
nasty 3 month sea trip!)

Actually I have a copy of the Miscellany (most treasured!) and have plans afoot
to obtain the other publications; but as I was only one of the assistant cooks
my input for the menu of this event was not requested.

However, I believe that the feast organiser and head cooks were keen to use the
resources they had and keeping in mind that both Meditterian Cuisine & Medieval
Kitchen both list the original recipes, I'm sure they would have been comparing
this to the final modern adaption.

To Reply to Ras's query - as I'm still very new to the whole cooking thing (only
about 2 years now - and most of those as a kitchen hand) I'm still a little
hesitant to translate my own recipes. With the help of fellow-cook-a-holics (Mel
- - are you out there? :-p) I'm gradually developing the confidence to work it all
out!

Which reminds me - does anyone have the original arabic version of the "Baghdad
Cookery book"??? (I'm working on an article for our Lochac A&S magazine
"Cockatrice" and would like to be able to show the original; the translated
version and the modern version that I have been playing with)

On the third hand ... the feast was done in Lochac, and airmail postage for
getting my collection to Lochac costs about twice as much as the books
themselves. Hopefully, as more and more of the primary sources are webbed, that
problem will disappear.
