Those of you who object to nose rings have never had to deal with a 2000 
pound boar that knows he's heading to slaughter.  You've never had to break 
a shovel to get one off of your leg, either.  I used to
work in a staging yard for the local livestock auction when I was growing 
up.  Commercial livestock doesn't get coddled or trained and  they can be 
unused to people and just plain mean.  The scars have faded, but the memory 
remains.

If anyone uses a heavy bit on a horse though, that's just plain wrong.
I used to have an old appalusa at my cousin's farm that we could ride 
without the bit at all.  I liked that much better and the horse responded 
well.
