If occupying the same space as the Mongols did, or would, at some point
in their history, allows them to be grouped together, than the Poles and
the Persians should be included, too. I guess you have to assume time
isn't an issue in this case. I was trying to draw a distinction between
the Huns who actually _were_ part of the loose Mongol confederation of
tribes, and the remnants of Atilla's crowd.

Not if time isn't an issue, and especially when it would have to come
under the heading of minutiae of colloquial speech.
