I suppose the answer would revolve around what exactly you mean by that 
statement. 'Common sense' is ethereal and differs dramatically in definition 
from person to person. More often than not 'a lack of common sense' on 
another's part merely boils down to the fact that they do things in a 
different way in a given situation.

Personally, common sense regarding the recreation of period recipes is a 
focused attempt to follow any given recipe as exactly as is possible whatever 
measures are needed to accomplish that.
