The stringed instrument is the _mandolin_. The thing with the blade on
it (rather like a grater only with a straight blade) in a _mandoline_.
My grandmother had one (the latter, that is) that was made to fit over a
large bowl- it was perfect for cutting cabbage to make sauerkraut.
