Hi y'all!

There's been an interesting discussion about boars on the Anglo-Saxon
list, and we've gotten down to how big they are. I thought the Cooks'
list might be interested in seeing this one...

Two of the more interesting ones that I know of personally (George isn't
the only wild life watcher <G>):

One was an injured wild boar that had to be shot. It weighed in at
800 kilos -- and, yes, Mimi, it certainly was the size of a bull.
500 pounds _is_ a challenge, but in this case there was nothing sporting
about killing a 1700 pound beast on a rampage. It was taken out with a
50 caliber Browning machine gun. The entire incident was observed by a
30 man military unit; it was then taken to a Christian Arab town as a
gift where it was weighed in. They indicated that it was very a big 'un,
but no record.

The other was a personal observation of a papa boar standing right next
to a gate two-meters wide scratching an itch on his shoulder -- and yep,
his rump stuck out on the left gate post and his snout stuck out on the
right one.

Other than the Danish Lexicon mentioned by Morten -- which at least is
closer to reality (5 feet at the shoulder hence 5 feet in length), printed
sources should be available in Arabic or Turkish or Georgian.

Gruntledly yours,

RISA
