Well yes. What would she likely mean by "sweet herbs"? And just how much
is a "teacupful"?

As to the ham and bacon question, this would be easier if there was
an ingredients list. Then you would be able to tell if bacon AND ham
were wanted. But if it is likely that the ham was a "Smithfield" type
ham, maybe it would have been mentioned earlier since it would seem
to be a good idea to cook it in the water/broth for awhile.
