Or a novelty worth recording. :-) 14th century texts refer to them as 'red', 
BTW.

Most likely they had a variety of colors to choose from. In the last year in 
the modern world cooks are once again able to purchase carrots in many 
colors. Giant and Wegman's currently carries burgundy and orange ones in 
regular stock and I am anticipating white ones at both stores this fall.
