My situation is slightly different. I am apprenticed to a Laurel.
However, I was his squire for several years before that. I'd already
started putting my efforts more into the kitchen and less on the
battlefield before health problems forced me to give up fighting. So,
after a heart-to-heart, we switched belts during a private audience with
Niobe when she was Crown Princess.

His Laurel is for Music; he cheerfully will never be mistaken for a
cook. I sing in the key of "off-bass" and, other than being able to
bludgeon out a few notes on a soprano recorder, have no musical ability
whatsoever. I do my own research. He helps out in my kitchens and
works with me on "peer quality" issues. I have several other local
Peers, only one of whom is a Laurel in Cooking, who provide support and
guidance in my development. My SCA life doesn't revolve around
desperately seeking a Laurel {I'm a Deputy Kingdom MOL among other
offices}. If someday it happens, I would accept it, but I'm not going
to change the way I do things in the SCA, even if it means I never
become a Peer. Five years from now, I'll be a better cook and teacher,
even if I don't have a medallion around my neck. This might not work
for other people, but it's my way of doing it.
