>From the same book, and page as my last post I found something that may be of
interest to those debating stuff about saffron.

In Cologne in 1452-1459, 3,169 pounds of saffron were imported. The total cost
of this was 6,694,513 marks or 2112.5 marks per pound of saffron.

I'm vaguely remembering there as being 16 oz in a pound (if I'm wrong blame it
on being 1:30 am) which means that it cost 132 marks per ounce of saffron.

By comparison, the next most expensive item is mace followed by cinammon and
they respectively cost 650 and 487.5 marks per pound or 48 and 30.5 marks per
ounce.
