I'm surprised that anyone could say saffron doesn't impart much
flavour. I can certainly see people not _liking_ the flavour, but the
saffron I've used has a very strong (relative to the amount used, of
course) and distinctive flavour.
Oh, and people might like to look at http://www.saffroninfo.com/ --
modern info rather than historical, however.
