no...not in Ansteorra

Or just a tradition that you can get around by

I felt the relationship was more important than anything. I didn't
apprentice to get noticed, or to necessarily improve my cooking. It was an
extension of an already close relationship between myself and Mistress
Charla. She was not made a Laurel primarily for her cooking abilities,
although she is a wonderful cook and very knowledgable in period foods. We
identified some areas I would like to branch into that she could help me
with. A Laurel here in Ansteorra is someone who(at least in MY opinion)
quests to continually improve themselves and contribute to making this game
we play as special as possible.

The Laurel apprentice relationship is something different to everyone.
This list has helped me a lot and I think there are several Laurels(or the
equivalent)on here. Gunthar has been a VERY helpful influence for me. You
don't have to be apprenticed to someone for them to help you out.
Let us know how you get along.
