If you use raised beds, copper foil tape is available at any hardware store. 
Simply lay a band around the top of the framework. The slugs touch it and 
ZAP! instant electric shock sends them off in another direction. Simply 
occasionally dusting your plants with diatomaceous earth will soon put an end 
to most of you slug/insect problems also. An added deterrent for small 
animals is red pepper spray and human hair placed around the plants will 
deter larger animals such as deer.
