Off the top of my head....
You might try using a young bird rather than a mature one, as the growing bones
of birds are much less dense. When they get to full size the bones gorw with far 
fewer holes in them. By the time a bird is flight ready, the bones may be too 
dense to do this
Size of the bird may not be the only factor. See if you can get nestlings.

Does the recipe indicate the age of the bird?
