The white mushrooms normally associated with the word in the USA are a sport 
found growing in commercial mushroom beds in the 1920s. This mushroom was a 
light tan color before then. Celebs, portebellas, morels, puffballs and 
truffles as well as the tan version of the common white mushroom would all 
have been known, SFAIK.
