Well, this was similar to the way I was thinking. However my suggestion is
to just go get a glass tumbler, perhaps you can even find one that looks
period, and then mark it. You could even use a period method of etching
or scribing to do it. Although I doubt they scribed graduated lines on
their glass as a measuring utensil. You might though be able to disguise
the measuring lines as part of more extensive artwork.
