Anything I might say on this would be speculation also, but I'm wondering if
"qat" may not mean leaf.  The Arabic "qatt" or "khat" describes a beverage
made from the leaves of Catha edulis, which was supplanted by coffee.  A
general term like leaf would suit most of the situations discussed.
