The chaos that I like to call my life has lifted
momentarily, so here is another bit of translation for
those who might want it.  The last one is still a bit weird
but I thought maybe someone might have a suggestion.  I'm
stumped -- what IS it?

part, but was SO wrong.


106 Lejía para lavar la cabeza

     Medio celemín de ceniza de sarmientos, y otro medio de
ceniza de encina, media libra de rasuras blancas quemadas y
molidas, otra media libra de alegría molida, seis maravedís
de ceniza de cendra. Echarlo todo esto en una caldera a
lechos y pisarlo mucho. Echarle un cántaro de agua y
dejarlo reposar dos o tres horas. Y después cueza hasta que
se ponga fuerte, lo que fuere menester. Poner medio celemín
de çeniza en una coladera, pasar esta lejía por ella y
tapar la vasija en que se colare, que no salga vaho
ninguno. Y después de colada poner con ella una escudilla
de miel.

Bleach for washing the head [i.e. hair]
 Half a celemin [1] of sifted vine shoot ash, and another
half of evergreen oak ash, half a pound of burned and
ground white [wine] dregs, another half pound of  ground
sesame (seeds), six maravedis of bone [2] ash.  Put all
this in a cauldron in layers and tread/step on it well. 
Put in a pitcher of water and let it rest/stand/settle two
or three hours.  And afterwards cook [it] until it becomes
strong [i.e. thick?], as much as is required.  Put half a
celemin of ash in a colander [3], put this bleach through
it and cover the vessel in[to] which it is strained, so
that no vapor may escape.  And after it is
strained/filtered put with [i.e. in] it a bowl of honey.

1: a dry measure of 4.6 liters

2: cendra: a paste of bone ash used to make a nearly flat
plate for refining silver and gold; ceniza de cendra could
be translated as either the ashes of this substance or the
ashes from, i.e. such as are used in, this substance.

3: coladera: grate or sewer.  However, it is similar to
colador (colander/sieve) - -dera and -dor both being
roughly equivalent to -er in English - which fits the
context better, so that is how I have tentatively
translated it.


107 Mudas para el rostro cuando caminan

     Una docena de granos de avena muy limpia, dos pepitas
de duraznos mondados. Majar esto todo junto con agua de
rostro muy majado. Echar tanto azúcar candi como una
avellana y tanto encienso como medio garbanço, y deshacerlo
muy bien. Quando quisieren caminar, juntar con ello una
gota de aceite de rasuras y ponerlo en el rostro. Guarda
mucho el rostro. Y si quisieren, pueden ponerlo a la noche
y quitárselo a la mañana lavándose con su agua de rostro.
Es también muy bueno para el rostro.

Ointment for the face when walking/travelling
     A dozen grains of very clean oats, two shelled
peach/apricot pits.  Grind all this together with face
water [until] well ground.  Put in as much white sugar as
an almond and as much incense as half a garbanzo, and
dissolve it very well.  When you want to walk/travel, mix
with it a drop of wine dreg oil and put it on your face. 
Protect your face well.  And if you wish, you can put it on
at night and remove it in the morning, washing with face
water.  It is also very good for the face.

108 Receta para hacer aceite de azahar

     Para cada libra de flor de azahar una onza de aceite.
Sobar la flor del azahar con el aceite y después de sobado,
ponerlo en un vaso al sol y menearlo de rato en rato; y si
fuere el sol muy recio, no lo dejen más de un día. Y
después colarlo, y coger aquel aceite con una pluma. Y si
no quedare con buen olor, tornadle a poner otra tanta flor
y haced lo mismo.

Recipe for making oil of citrus blossoms
     For each pound of citrus blossoms an ounce of oil. 
Knead? pound? the citrus blossoms with the oil and after
[it is] kneaded/pounded, put it in a glass in the sun and
shake it every so often; and if the sun is very strong, do
not leave it more than a day.  And afterwards strain/filter
it, and gather/pick up that oil with a feather.  And if it
doesn't have a good scent, put in another, similar
[quantity] of blossoms and do the same.


110 Polvos para alcoholar los ojos

     Atutía quemada en un crisol nueve veces, y muerta en
agua rosada y curada al aire. Y después molida y pasada por
un cedazo muy espeso. Alcoholarse los ojos con estos
polvos.

Powder to darken the eyes (i.e. eyeliner)[1]
     Lampblack (?) [2] burned in a crucible nine times, and
slaked with rose water and cured in the air.  And
afterwards ground and passed through a very thick (i.e.
fine?) sieve.  Darken your eyes with this powder.

1: alcoholar: to darken the brows or edges of the eyelid
with a black powder made at first of antimony(?) or lead
sulfide, and later of lampblack(?).  Probably related to
kohl.

2: Atutia: crust formed of zinc oxide and other bodies,
made in the chinmeys of ovens where zinc ore is treated. 
Also, mercury.


129 Receta para pasteles de membrillos

     Tomar los membrillos los más lisos que hallares, y
mondarlos, y hacerles un agujero como un real desde el
pezón hasta el otro cabo, y sacarle las pepitas. Y henchir
el agua de azúcar, y canela y manteca de vacas, tanto de
uno como de otro. Y tapar el agujero con manteca de vacas.
Y poner en cada membrillo una docena de clavos enteros. Y
poner en cada pastel tres o cuatro membrillos, y lo bacío
del pastel henchirlo de yemas de huevos; y tapar el pastel
y cocerlo en el horno. La masa del pastel será masada con
manteca de vacas fresca.

Recipe for quince cakes
     Take the smoothest quinces you can find, and peel
them, and make [in] them a hole like [i.e. the size of] a
real from the tip (lit. nipple) to the other end, and
remove the seeds.  And fill the water[1] with sugar, and
cinnamon and cow lard, as much of one and of the
other/another.  And cover/seal the hole with cow lard.  And
put in each quince a dozen whole cloves.  And put in each
cake three or four quinces, and fill the empty space of the
cake with egg yolks; and cover the cake and cook it in the
oven.  The dough of the cake will be [i.e. should be] made
with fresh cow lard.

1: well, that's what it SAYS; I suspect "fill the hole" is
what was meant, but cannot support it except by common
sense and a bit of context.


130 Receta para conserva de azahar

     Limpiar la flor y, lavada, majarla y exprimirla con
las manos muy bien; y después lavarla en agua limpia
mudándole el agua hasta que se pare el azahar dulce. Y como
sea dulce, tomar dos partes de flor y una de azúcar
clarificado en punto alto, y otra de miel apurado. Y desque
esté frío, echar dentro el azahar muy premido con las
manos, y revolvedlo muy bien, y ponedle un poco de almizcle
deshecho en agua de olor.

Recipe for citrus blossom preserves
     Clean the flowers and, washed, crush them and squeeze
them thoroughly with your hands; and afterwards wash them
in clean water  changing the water until the citrus
blossoms become sweet.  And when they are sweet, take two
parts of flowers and highly [1] clarified sugar, and
another of finished(?) honey.  And when it is cold, put in
the squeezed [2] citrus blossoms with your hands [3], and
turn it very well, and put in a little musk disolved in
scented water.

1: lit: clarified to/in/on/about a high point.

2: I am assuming here that premir is a variation of
exprimir.  

3: Or: put in the hand-squeezed citrus blossoms.


131 Receta para hacer conserva de alojas

     Para seis onzas de almidón dos libras de azúcar. Echar
el almidón en una escudilla de agua rosada y derretir el
azúcar en otra escudilla de agua rosada. Y en dando tres o
cuatro hervores, echarle una clara de huevo batido. Y en
tornando a hervir, colarla por un paño espeso. Y colar el
almidón. Y junto con el azúcar, ponedlo al fuego. Y esté al
fuego hasta que se ponga espeso, meneándolo siempre. Y como
esté espeso, echadlo en sus cajas.

Recipe for lark/spiced honey drink preserves
     For six ounces of starch two pounds of sugar.  Put the
starch in a bowl of rose water and melt the sugar in
another bowl of rose water.  And while it boils two or
three times, put in a beaten egg white.  And returning it
to a boil, strain/filter it through a thick cloth.  And
strain/filter the starch.  And together with the sugar, put
it on the fire.  And it should be on the fire until it
becomes thick, always stirring it.  And when it is thick,
put it in its boxes.
