Per Riley's short bibliography of Michelangelo on p. 37 "The spinach and
fennel recipes in the monumental cookery book compiled by his comtemporary
Bartolomeo Scappi, might well have appeared as part of te sumptuous banquets
that Michelangelo enjoyed as dining companion to Poope Paul III" I would
guess she took this recipe from Scappi.

However I do have one quote from Michelangelo himself which implies that he
did in fact eat fennel. Sending a poem to a friend, he added the following
note: "this awkward thing, already said a thousand times, for the fennels."
Apparently he sent several poems to friends(patrons?) as thanks for gifts of
food over time.
