Rowan, you're not the only one.  I joined the cook's list, oh, probably a
year and a half ago.  My library consisted of Santich's "Original
Mediterranean Cuisine" and Scully's French cookbook (whatever it's called),
and I had no experience in medieval cooking.  Zip, zero, nada.  I lurked and
copied recipes and learned from everything I read.
This past year I cooked two feasts and backed up a third when the head cook
got sick at the last minute.  I've got three scheduled for next year.
Mostly, I still lurk, but I do that on all the email lists I belong to.  I
ask questions when I've got 'em, and respond to questions when I can, but
I'm much happier just soaking up the knowledge that everybody else here has
to share.
