No. I clearly stated that I used this bird in a period-like manner. It was 
listed on the ingredients list as emu. At the time of the purchase there were 
no ostriches ready for slaughter although I had been told there would be. 
Because the feast was eminent, I chose to substitute emu, which was ready for 
slaughter, for the ostrich. On the 'claw,' I paid 100 dollars for the bird. 
There was 47 pounds of meat on the carcass, not including the neck (which was 
used for making broth). At a little over 2 dollars a pound, it was way 
cheaper than beef or lamb was at the time. For various reasons, pork was not 
an option. 

I usually do not go out of period when selecting ingredients. In fact, the 
emu has been the only time I have done so in the 17 years I have been cooking 
feasts in the SCA. Would I do it again? Probably, if the ostrich was not 
ready for slaughter and the emu was.
