IIRC, 
Hanson's disease (leprosy) is commonly contracted as a child by some
exposure to the disease, and is rarely transmitted to adults.
It is dormant for years until some event in adulthood triggers the 
active phase, when it attacks the peripheral nervous system, rendering
the infected insensitive to pain. The problems arise from infections 
and gangrene due to unfelt and therefore untended splinters, cuts 
and sores.

That is, IF I am recalling this correctly.
