Well, on the Kasha topic. I used to live with a Russian, and he said 
that, at least in his personal experience, kasha was just a 
particular type of cooked grain dish, and it was not necessarily make 
of buckwheat. Granted, not a historical resource, but it at least 
suggests that kasha is a type of cooked dish, not necessarily a term 
refering to the ingredients. Additionally, the kasha he knew was not 
cooked with egg (he was from Moldova and his mother was from Tashkent 
- - so between them they cover an awful lot of geographical territory)
