This is inaccurate. Only certain popular sects of al-Islam forbid alcohol 
consumption entirely. The Prophet himself drank a mild type of date wine 
daily. The only proscription in al-Quran refers to not letting a single drop 
of wine pass your lips or some such. This proscription is oftentimes adhered 
to strictly by pouring the first drop of wine onto the ground and then 
drinking the rest.

I have no doubt your friend in al-Islam may have belonged to one of those 
sects and was a teetotaler but the generalization of any aspect of al-Islam 
is as error prone to generalizations of Christianity or Buddhism or any other 
religion which is split into sects.
