SC - SC- Best food for War

I picked up the habit of bringing a jug or three of frozen drinks from
Brangwayna. (Speaking of which, Brangwayna, is that spiced lemonade you make
based on a period recipe?) My favorite dish for war is skewered meat. I cut up
the meat beforehand and freeze it with some sort of marinade. Once at war I thaw
it and grill it, sometimes with vegetables. It's easy to cook and easy to eat,
with very little cleanup required.
I usually pack good quality tomato soup, tuna fish, honey butter, bread,
mustard, ham, summer sausage, and cheese. I had good luck making hand sized pies
and tarts and then freezing them a couple years ago, though I suggest more than
two varieties. ;> Pickles. In hot weather pickles are your friends. Syrup
based drinks take up little space and taste very good. For breakfast, I like
applesauce with nuts and dried fruits. I'm told that both oatmeal and frumentry
are good that way too. Bring eggs to boil, scramble, and make french toast when
the bread gets stale. Nothing beats hummus when the weather is hot.
I tend to do most of my cooking beforehand because I tend to eat on the run
at war. My best suggestion for you is to do prep work before war whenever
possible. If you know you want your meat cut in chunks, do it at home and freeze
it. Pre measure ingredients and package in ziploc bags. If you aren't an expert
in outdoor cookery, treat war as a feast with uncertain kitchen facilities.
