Well, it sure isn't exactly period...

>What started the thread, however, was a quote from the Trimaran
>newsletter, which was somewhat stronger:
>
>"While I am on the subject of food, let me address feast in general. More
>than anything, his Highness and I want our populace to be able to eat the
>food that their populace has paid for. So when we step up, we request that
>all Feastcrats endeavor to stay away from all period feasts. We do not mind
>if some removes are of a period nature, however, we wish other removes of a
>more easily digested by the majority-of-the-populace nature!..."

It has sort-of been clarified on one of the many messages in one of
the many related threads on this list (and this topic has generated a
lot of threads) with a post forwarded from Trimaris. Apparently when
the Crown Princess said "all period feasts" she meant "entirely
period feasts". So mostly modern food with the occasional safe period
"remove". Steak and potatoes with a side of Cuskynoles...

>In any case, the statement clearly implies the belief that period
>food is hard to digest and tastes bad. But it does not say that
>their hignesses are absolutely opposed to their being any period
>food at feasts during their reign. The material on the web page does
>imply (in the stated preferences) that strikingly out of period food
>is a good thing if it happens to fit their highnesses tastes.

I've been trying not to post to this thread. Really i have, but...

My understanding from my limited experience of feasts (just two and i
was helping at both, not eating in the hall) is that the Royal table
can get special foods per Their Majesties/Highnesses/
please-insert-appropriate-polite-honorifics requests, if they have
special preferences or allergies, etc. (not counting the special
dishes prepared in Their honor)

But i gotta just say, Tang!?!?! Hawaiian Punch!?!?! Aaaaaaargh!!!

When i'm the Crown Princess (yeah, right, sure, what-everrr) i want
all period feasts all the time. I'm willing to try odd experiments.
How exciting is life without taking a few risks? I wouldn't know
about so many delicious modern ethnic foods if i hadn't been willing
to take chances. How will i know about delicious Medieval and
Renaissance dishes without taking a few chances?

One of my favorite drinks at the Ren Faire used to be "Haymaker's
Switchel", which was pretty close to Sekanjaben. That was refreshing
in the heat and dust. (i say "used to be" because the business moved
away and doesn't do NoCal faire anymore).

If i really prefer modern food, well, gee, i can certainly skip it
for one or two meals per month for 6 months (although here in the
West it's only for 4 months). Is giving up a gallon of Tang per month
that hard?

Anahita the incredulous
trying real hard not to rant, rant, rant

Do understand that i am quite sympathetic to those with actual food
sensitivities or allergies or dietary restrictions. HH the CP just
seems so, well, capricious.

Well, there i go again, being undiplomatic.
