The 'best' is dependent upon the type every fruit and vegetable has it's own
unique features when it is in prime condition or at a perfect stage of
ripeness. Also different dishes oftentimes demand differing types of
ripeness. There is no one way to tell how everything is ripe or in prime
condition.

Generally speaking vegetables should be of good color, no sign of wilting and
very firm to the touch. Fruits should smell of the type of fruit they are,
have good color, yield slightly to gentle pressure. Remember that tomatoes
are in the fruit group when selecting for ripeness.
