SC - Period French Toast Recipies

I've got FREE venison coming for my feast in April. Kitchen limitations mean 
roasting is not an option and I already have a soup planned. So, I'm 
thinking pies. I know where to find recipes for later period venison pies, 
the kind that you pour top up the broth or gravy in thepie with melted 
butter after baking and save the thing for later.  How early would this be 
appropriate?  Does anyone have an early celtic or Irish/Welsh/Scots 
reference to meat pie and/or another idea for the venison.

(I know that Irish/Welsh/Scots are not the complete definition of Celtic, 
but they are the definition for this event.)
