Well, it would have if we had been able to keep the fire going all
night or kept easily spoiled things like chicken out of it.

Perhaps that is one advantage of a fireplace. Once the rocks or bricks
are heated, perhaps that would keep the pot warm enough to prevent
food spoilage even if the fire were to die down.

This is the first time I've seen the eternal soup pot done, but I
was concerned by the chance of it spoiling. And I don't believe I was
the only one.

I did find that the soup improved as the days went by.

I like the idea and would love to try it again. Has anyone else tried
this "eternal soup pot" idea? How did it work for you? How did you
make sure it stayed at a safe temperature, particularly at night? Did
you set some kind of duty roster where someone had to wake up and feed
the fire? Use only food items that wouldn't spoil? Take your chances?
