He wants to eat period food.  It's just that the poor fellow a) doesn't like 
the combination of sweet spices and meat (or much of anything sweet in any 
cuisine) and b) has been subjected to too many feasts where *every single 
dish* had cinnamon, ginger, and saffron in it, so everything tasted the same.
He's also very interested in trying to reconstruct as accurately as possible 
what peasants' or soldiers' meals might have been like, as it suits his 
persona more than a nobleman's feast.  To that end, Cariadoc has given him 
his conjectural oatcakes recipe, and I gave him the Peascoddes recipe from Le 
Menagier, the one where you boil the peas in the pod and mix in either butter 
or lard, and then serve.
