I don't know...I know such substitutions are sometimes okay (depending
on the dish) with other dried fruits, but then one usually needs to make
other accomodations (amount of liquid, time cooked, etc).  I've never
tasted a fresh date, so I have no way to compare the two flavors, darn
it!
