This of course varied from time to time, region to region and class to 
class. In some cases, folks seem to be more interested in keeping
obnoxious odors from getting to them than about any they might be
providing. For that, pomanders were often carried, which could then
be held close to the nose when offending odors appeared. At other
times, perfumes were encouraged. For other cultures cleanliness was
important.
