True, it was taken by the pilgrims as a badge during their pilgrimage to
his shrine in Santiago de Compostella. The French language still uses
'coquille St. Jacques' for scallop ('shell of St. James').

I use it for a personal badge as well, usually with a thistle head
overall. It's that 'James' thing....
