The seeds from star anise are large, reddish brown and oblong in shape. They
are NOT the aniseed commonly used in cookery. The aniseed commonly used in
cookery looks very much like cumin seed. It is very small and grayish in
color.
I agree though that star anise is not toxic. Many herbalists go way over
board with their 'toxic' bullcrap. One book I have lists nutmeg as toxic when
in fact the amount that would need to be consumed at one time is equal to a
whole nutmeg. Another lists hot peppers as toxic. Read all such trash with a
very large grain of salt.
