My family's friendly butcher subscribed to this notion (where the knife
impaired were concerned, at any rate!)

My mother had been on at him for ages to sharpen all our knives and he kept
resisting, saying that whenever he sharpened anyone's knives they always cut
themselves. Finally my mother prevailed arguing that she wouldn't cut
herself. So, he sharpened all the knives in the house. It will come as no
surprise to hear that mum lost a big slice of thumb the first time she used
one!
